The name of my entry is “From My Beach to Yours”. The concept behind this shoe starts from the roots of we all come from many places and backgrounds and cultures but we all meet at the same shores (our shared interests, passions etc) with my family being from the Virgin Islands and me being raised in Miami I wanted to pay homage to that culture while also creating a shoe that could allow others to express their own style if the wanted to. The concept of this shoe is that it’s made with tear away canvas that reveals custom glow in the dark fabric that represent the Caribbean and Miami culture.
I used raw material that ties back to virgin island and Carribean culture. Since this shoe represents the carribean and Miami, I wanted to use a material that ties into both and since those two areas that get hit with hurricanes the most, I wanted the thicker material on the toe to represent sandbags which is a staple for flooding when hurricanes hit those areas. Created a custom tongue with a zipper that reveals the name of the shoe, written in sand, “from my beach to yours” The outsole is made to represent sand and transitions to an oceanic midsole to represent that shore line. Gold on the heel because the Virgin Islands is known for selling jewelry and gold is part of my culture in fashion, I even have gold teeth lol
One pair is the is sunrise pair (right shoes) and the other being the sunset pair (left shoe) with imagery representing different aspects of the culture that raised me from graffiti in Miami Wynwwod, to my mothers plants etc. This pair is what it would look like if I distressed my pair and the concept is if you had a pair yourself you would distress it in a way that connects to you hence the name from my beach to yours.
I wanted to use all the skills I’ve gained over the years to create these bad boys from painting, to sewing, to custom graphics, designing and story telling. We all come from different places but meet at the same shores, so from my beach to yours we are all sharing stories of our culture.
