For this sneaker design, I used an actual basketball net to create the pattern. It's rooted in my ongoing painting series, What’s HER Net Worth?™, where I use sports nets as stencils to explore themes of gender equity, visibility, and self-worth.

What’s HER Net Worth?™  shines a light on gender inequality, honoring both the progress that has been made and the work that remains to ensure equal pay and opportunity for our daughters, sisters, and mothers. It's also a reminder that value isn’t assigned—it’s claimed. Honoring self-worth, collective strength, and the belief that your network is part of your net worth.

This is a culturally relevant conversation, especially within sports. It feels meaningful to use my artwork to amplify women in athletics and to challenge inequity in spaces where women’s contributions have historically been undervalued.

While my canvas work typically uses spray paint, these shoes required a different approach. I used an airbrush to stencil the basketball net onto the shoe, adapting my process to the medium. Because this design centers on equal pay, I hand-painted the word EQUAL on the right shoe—using the Under Armour UA logo itself to spell the word. It became a kind of visual puzzle, almost like a trippy version of Wordle. After researching whether Under Armour had done this before and finding that they hadn’t, I felt a genuine spark of excitement—which arists' will feel when they unlock something new.

I also intentionally emphasized the letters EQ in EQUAL, which stands for emotional quotient or emotional intelligence. People with high EQ tend to lead with empathy and self-awareness—qualities essential to those who advocate for equality, for everyone.

One of my favorite hidden details lives inside the left tongue of the shoe. I cut a basketball net into two small pieces, painted them, and formed an equal sign. It’s a quiet detail-but an important one intended only for the wearer of the shoe to see.

Because I view this as a high-level art piece, the color palette reflects that intention. The base is a rich sandy camel tone that immediately felt right to me on the rich texture of the  suede. The orange serves as a nod to the WNBA while also functioning as a luxury accent color. The chocolate brown laces with orange flecks were carefully chosen to complement that balance of sport and sophistication.

These shoes are truly one-of-one—not just aesthetically, but in their message. I gave this project everything I had, mentally and physically, and had a great deal of joy throughout the process. I’m deeply honored to be part of this competition and to have this work displayed.

A HISTORIC COLLABORATION

Created in partnership with Rakuten, brought together thousands of custom sneaker artists from across the US and Europe. With Rakuten’s support, the competition became one of the largest creator-driven sneaker showcases ever produced, giving emerging artists a platform on a global stage. From thousands of entries, just 100 creators were shortlisted by a world-class judging panel featuring leaders across sport, design, music, and sneaker culture. These Top 100 designs formed the Art of the Game Official Collection - a rare, curated snapshot of sneaker culture at its most innovative. The journey concluded in San Francisco, where the finalists were flown out for a filmed finale with the Judges. This finale marked a milestone moment: a celebration of creators, culture, and the evolution of custom sneakers as a legitimate art form. Now, for the first time ever, you can own a piece of this history. Each Top 100 sneaker - whether the original pair or a made-to-order version in your size - represents a creator who rose above thousands to earn their place in this landmark Rakuten x Stephen Curry series. This isn’t just a sneaker. It’s a piece of the Art of the Game legacy - and a chapter in the future of sneaker culture.
