Created in partnership with Rakuten, brought together thousands of custom sneaker artists from across the US and Europe. With Rakuten’s support, the competition became one of the largest creator-driven sneaker showcases ever produced, giving emerging artists a platform on a global stage. From thousands of entries, just 100 creators were shortlisted by a world-class judging panel featuring leaders across sport, design, music, and sneaker culture. These Top 100 designs formed the Art of the Game Official Collection - a rare, curated snapshot of sneaker culture at its most innovative. The journey concluded in San Francisco, where the finalists were flown out for a filmed finale with the Judges. This finale marked a milestone moment: a celebration of creators, culture, and the evolution of custom sneakers as a legitimate art form. Now, for the first time ever, you can own a piece of this history. Each Top 100 sneaker - whether the original pair or a made-to-order version in your size - represents a creator who rose above thousands to earn their place in this landmark Rakuten x Stephen Curry series. I wanted to present the esthetic of microwave popcorn. As If the pair itself is the popcorn bag that you place in the microwave. The bag is labeled with a Popcorn company logo, the flavor of popcorn and varies silhouettes of popcorn popping all over the shoe in an eye catching blue color. It also has the labels of how to carefully hold the hot popcorn bag when taking it out the microwave and I couldn’t forget the butter and oil stains on the areas of the pair. The mid sole and sole of the sneaker is a buttery yellow color to of course to highlight how buttery this pair is with light to heavy butter application. And lastly, you can’t forget your movie ticket that’s presented as a lacelock that’s presented on the front of the shoe as a movie ticket to highlight the Steph Curry documentary “UNDERATED.
A lot of how I create pairs with themes I chose come from a nostalgic place, reflecting on my childhood by paying an homage to myself. The inspiration for this concept was birthed the moment I research Steph Curry and his love for popcorn. It’s mentioned that he says popcorn comes from a nostalgic place as well and this is where I wanted to make that connection through my custom pair. I also wanted to connect to Steph Curry with a moment of nostalgia and impression, considering that this is his shoe brand and he’s also one of the judges. I don’t know much about him but when I researched how much Steph loves popcorn, I had a flashback of some of my favorites moments as a kid with my family watching movies and eating popcorn. As a family we watched movies at home a lot because growing up I didn’t have as much privilege to go to the cinema as much so in the art of my mom or uncles creativity, they would say “We got the theater at home”. So every last Friday night of the month, I could rent my favorite 2 movies from the video store and before I leave the video store, don’t forget to grab a box of microwave popcorn.
