Hello, my name is Javier Carabias, and I’m a customizer based in Spain. My project is inspired by the Muwekma Ohlone tribe, native to the San Francisco area.

When I started thinking about the design, I tried to find some interesting ideas related to the city of San Francisco typical food, iconic places but none of them truly inspired me to develop my style. Then I realized it would be a good idea to use my participation to send a message; after all, art is about that ideas expressed through an audiovisual medium.

So I thought about those groups that need to be seen by the rest of the world, since their voices aren’t heard as loudly as they deserve. I’ve always found Native American culture fascinating because I believe they deserve everyone’s respect and acceptance. Besides, Indigenous style carries deep symbolism and a spectacular use of color that fits perfectly with my artistic approach. The traditional garments, the patterns, the colors all of this led me to research which tribe was native to the San Francisco area, and that’s how I discovered the Muwekma.

What caught my attention the most was the headpiece they wear in front of their eyes; it seemed so colorful and such a beautiful detail to include in the sneakers. Moreover, this tribe is currently fighting to have their tribal status officially recognized by the U.S. government, which makes it an opportunity to help the world learn about their situation through my art.

As for the techniques I used in the project, they are quite simple: paint and brush. I love to make all the details with only a brush, I think is a great challenge for an artist, and I love challenges. To paint the shoe inner I have used gac90 mixed in 1:1 ratio to make softer the texture. To paint the tongue logo, I have used leather dye mixed with sole bright to allow the dye penetrate into the plastic, is a very interesting trick. I have used a rope as shoelaces to bring more soul to the custom.

I hope that you can see all the work (more than 30 hours), love and effort that I put in this project.

A HISTORIC COLLABORATION

Created in partnership with Rakuten, brought together thousands of custom sneaker artists from across the US and Europe. With Rakuten’s support, the competition became one of the largest creator-driven sneaker showcases ever produced, giving emerging artists a platform on a global stage. From thousands of entries, just 100 creators were shortlisted by a world-class judging panel featuring leaders across sport, design, music, and sneaker culture. These Top 100 designs formed the Art of the Game Official Collection - a rare, curated snapshot of sneaker culture at its most innovative. The journey concluded in San Francisco, where the finalists were flown out for a filmed finale with the Judges. This finale marked a milestone moment: a celebration of creators, culture, and the evolution of custom sneakers as a legitimate art form. Now, for the first time ever, you can own a piece of this history. Each Top 100 sneaker - whether the original pair or a made-to-order version in your size - represents a creator who rose above thousands to earn their place in this landmark Rakuten x Stephen Curry series. This isn’t just a sneaker. It’s a piece of the Art of the Game legacy - and a chapter in the future of sneaker culture.
